THE HISTORICAL OLD TOWN
“Few houses piled up on a hill forming a labyrinth of narrow streets going up and down, with the mystery of the antique fortress, built in defence from the ‘Saraceni’, still present.”
That is how Edmondo de Amicis described the picturesque old town of Bordighera. Hundred years later things have not changed a lot and the historic old part is still fascinating.
It is a fortified village in the form of an irregular pentagon surrounded by medieval ramparts, which have been reinforced in the middle of the 6th century.
To access you pass one of the three gates: the ‘Porta del Capo’ or ‘Porta Nuova’ in the south, dating back to the 7th century, the ‘Porta Soprana’ or ‘Porta della Maddalena’ in the east, inaugurated in 1780, and the ‘Porta Sottana’ in the west, which was built in 1470 when the village was founded and renovated in the Baroque era crowned by the Genovese coat of arms of ‘San Giorgio’. There are various alleys and small squares but the two main streets are ‘Via Lunga’ and ‘Via Dritta’.
The majority of the houses are built with arches in support of the walls reminding the terrifying earthquake of 1887.
